Vasil Varonin. The battle near the Hojdaŭ Island on the Dzvina River: To the situation of the Polack land in the second third of the 13-th century
In the 1260s, the Duchy of Polack was in a difficult political and military situation. As a result, its territory became an arena of hostilities, including for external forces. A vivid and revealing episode of this military struggle was the battle that took place between the Pskov-Lithuanian army of Duke Daŭmont and the Lithuanian pursuit in June 1266 near the island of Hojdaŭ on the right bank of the river Dzvina. The Pskov-Lithuanian forces managed to win a resounding victory. Despite the fact that no more than eight hundred people from both sides participated in the battle, it became a notable event in the military history of Pskov, Lithuania, and Polack. The paper also examines several issues related to the difficult and tang led problem of the struggle for power and the chronology of reigns in the Duchy of Polack during the period when it increasingly fell into the sphere of influence of the young Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
